The environmental zones in Hannover came into force on the same day as in Berlin, on the 1. 1. 2008, from which date only vehicles with a red, yellow or green sticker were allowed to enter the city. A year later, however, vehicles with a red sticker were banned from entering. Since 1. 1. 2010, only vehicles with a green badge placed on the windshield may enter the city.
Munich also introduced the environmental zones in 2008.

From 1. 1. 2010, all drivers need a green badge to enter Hannover. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 80 euros. The low-emissions zone of Hannover includes the city centre with adjacent surroundings. Its border is comprised of highways on the west, south and east, and to the north the Sahlkamp neighbourhood.
