Initially, even less environmentally friendly vehicles, including those with a red plaque, were allowed to enter Augsburg. Gradually, the conditions tightened and from June 1, 2016, only domestic and foreign vehicles with a green sticker can enter Augsburg and most German cities.
In 2008, environmental zones were introduced also, for example, in HThe obligation to own the environmental badge applies to both German and foreign passenger cars (M1); motorhomes (M1); heavy campers (M1); minibuses (M2); buses (M3); small transporters (N1); transporters (N2); trucks (N2); and heavy goods vehicles (N3).
As of 1.6.2016, both German and foreign drivers need the green badge to enter Augsburg. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles that produce a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 (diesel) or Euro 1 (petrol) emissions classes. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros.
The Augsburg environmental zone includes a wider area of the city, as defined by streets and roads – in the west, Rosenaustraße; in the south, Scherlinstraße; in the east, Jakoberwallstraße and Forsterstraße; in the north, Dieselstraße and Berliner Allee.
