On 21st November, 2017, an emergency low-emissions zone (ZPA) came into force in Chambéry, the county seat of the department of Savoie. Both French and foreign drivers may enter the activated low-emissions zone with a valid Crit’Air badge of the E, 1, 2 and 3 emissions classes. Entry will be banned to cars with a lower emissions class or without a badge.
As in Germany, Austria and other European countries, France is seeking to improve the environment and the quality of life of its residents in larger cities.
You can read more about the types of environmental badges in the section Types of Environmental Badges.
From 21. 11. 2017, foreign cars must be marked with the “crit’air” environmental badge. This so-called emergency low-emissions zone takes effect when a higher smog level lasts for more than 2 days. Only vehicles with the Crit’air sticker of classes E, 1, 2, and 3 may therefore enter the activated low-emissions zone. There are 6 types of badge in France that express how much the vehicle is involved in air pollution. If you fail to comply with these rules, you risk a fine of € 68 to € 375 (i.e. approximately £ 62 – £ 320).
The entire Savoie department falls within the Chambéry low-emissions zone, with the areas of the activated zone that are determined by the department’s deputies to be in a state of emergency.
