About Green Zones in Dortmund

Green Zone in Dortmund, Germany

In 2008, Dortmund introduced environmental zones, as did Bonn, Essen, Herten and other cities in the region. These cities gradually tightened entry rules to keep the air clean and the noise level low. From 1.10.2008, vehicles with red, yellow or green stickers were allowed to enter; on 1.1.2013, this was reduced to cars with the yellow or green stickers. Finally, from 1.7. 2014, the city has banned the entry of cars with a yellow environmental badge, so only the most environmentally friendly vehicles (with the green sticker) have been let in.

Driving in Dortmund

Are you going to Dortmund by car?

From 1. 7. 2014, all drivers need a green badge to enter Dortmund. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros. Dortmund, as well as other cities forming the Ruhr agglomeration, i.e. Bonn, Essen, Hagen and others, belongs to the low-emissions zone.
