This low emission zone has been abolished. No environmental badge is required for any type of vehicle to enter. Environmental badges that have already been issued remain valid for all other low emission zones in Germany.
Erfurt is one of the German cities which immediately after the introduction of environmental zones banned the entry of vehicles with a red or yellow badge and permitted entry only with a green sticker. Drivers of older, less environmentally friendly vehicles thus had no time to prepare, unlike those in other cities. It should be however noted that Erfurt introduced the environmental zones in the second half of 2012, i.e. four and a half years after they had been introduced in the first German cities, specifically Berlin, Munich, and Cologne.
From 1. 10. 2012, all drivers need a green badge to enter Erfurt. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros. The low-emissions zone of Erfurt covers an overwhelming majority of the city´s area, meaning you cannot avoid purchasing the badge.
