About Green Zones in Gelsenkirchen

Green Zone in Gelsenkirchen, Germany

From 1.7. 2014, the entire Ruhr area to which Gelsenkirchen belongs requires vehicles to display a green environmental plaque to enter the city. The aim of the low-emissions zone is to prevent vehicles from entering that emit a high concentration of nitrogen oxides and severely deteriorate air quality. Therefore, both domestic and foreign passenger cars and trucks must have a green environmental badge to enter the zone.
Both German and foreign drivers are obliged to have this stamp placed on the windscreen of the vehicle.

Which types of vehicles are affected?

The obligation to own the environmental badge applies to both German and foreign passenger cars (M1); motorhomes (M1); heavy campers (M1); minibuses (M2); buses (M3); small transporters (N1); transporters (N2); trucks (N2); and heavy goods vehicles (N3).

Driving in Gelsenkirchen

Are you going to Gelsenkirchen by car?

From 1st July 2014, entry to Gelsenkirchen and the entire Ruhr area is only permitted on condition that a green plaque is placed on the windscreen. Entrance is therefore allowed only to German and foreign vehicles that produce a minimum level of air pollution – the Euro 4 (diesel) or Euro 1 (petrol) emissions classes. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros.
Gelsenkirchen, as well as, for example, Dortmund, Essen and Hagen, is part of the Ruhr low-emissions zone, which also includes important road communications between these cities. The boundary of Gelsenkirchen’s own low-emissions zone follows the perimeter of the city, including the Buer neighbourhood.
