Validity of the Grand Paris Low Emission Zone
Since 1.7. 2019
- From Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 8 pm, only vehicles with a valid environmental sticker Crit’Air of class E, 1, 2, 3 or 4 have been allowed to enter. For trucks (N2, N3) and buses, the same criteria and time limits also apply at weekends and on public holidays.
Since 1.1. 2021
- A ban on entry for vehicles with Crit’Air 4 is planned.
Since 1.7. 2022
- A ban on entry for vehicles with Crit’Air 3 is planned.
Since 1.1. 2024
- A ban on entry for vehicles with Crit’Air 2 is planned, i.e. a total ban on diesel vehicles.

Zone Boundaries
The environmental zone is approximately bordered by the A86 motorway, which embraces a large conurbation around the capital of France, comprising a total of 131 municipal districts. As each administrative unit decides separately on the introduction of a zone, the low-emissions zone is currently valid in only 47. However, more will follow.
The Grand Paris zone includes the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes urban forests, as well as the busy Boulevard périphérique highway encircling the inner perimeter of Paris. The A86 motorway itself is excluded from the zone.

In July 2019, a new Grand Paris environmental zone was introduced in Paris, thereby significantly expanding the area to which entry restrictions apply to less environmentally-friendly vehicles. This zone has a permanent validity on specific days, regardless of the then-current air situation (as is the case of the emergency Paris ZPA zone, which comes into force when the emissions limits are exceeded).
The low-emissions zone is situated on the territory of the so-called Greater Paris, an extensive agglomeration around the French city with an area of approximately 815 km², which includes a total of 131 municipalities with more than 7 million inhabitants. In principle, the boundaries of the low-emissions zone follow the territory as defined by the A86 motorway circuit, which, however, remains excluded from the zone.
Currently (July 2019) the zone is valid in 47 city districts – areas highlighted in yellow on the map below, with others to follow. The zone is permanent, regardless of the then-current level of air pollution, as is the case with other French zones.
Violation of the rules is severely punished in France – ranging from a reprimand by a police officer to a fine of between € 68 and € 375 (i.e. approximately £ 62 – £ 320).

Are you going to Grand Paris by car?
As of July 2019, passenger cars must be labelled with the Crit’Air environmental badge. The plaque must be affixed pre-entry to the Grand Paris zone from Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 8 pm. In France, there are 6 types of badge, and entry to the wider Greater Paris zone is now permitted to cars and trucks that achieve at least the red Crit’Air 4.
If you fail to comply with these rules, you risk a fine of € 68 to € 375 (i.e. approximately £ 62 – £ 320).
The Greater Paris agglomeration, bordered by the A86 motorway, is part of the Grand Paris low-emissions zone.
