This low emission zone has been abolished. No environmental badge is required for any type of vehicle to enter. Environmental badges that have already been issued remain valid for all other low emission zones in Germany.
The environmental zones in Hanover came into force on the same day as in Berlin, on the 1. 1. 2008, from which date only vehicles with a red, yellow or green sticker were allowed to enter the city. A year later, however, vehicles with a red sticker were banned from entering. Since 1. 1. 2010, only vehicles with a green badge placed on the windshield may enter the city.
Munich also introduced the environmental zones in 2008.
From 1. 1. 2010, all drivers need a green badge to enter Hanover. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros. The low-emissions zone of Hanover includes the city centre with adjacent surroundings. Its border is comprised of highways on the west, south and east, and to the north the Sahlkamp neighbourhood.
