This low emission zone has been abolished. No environmental badge is required for any type of vehicle to enter. Environmental badges that have already been issued remain valid for all other low emission zones in Germany.
The city of Karlsruhe introduced the environmental zones in 2009, a year later than did the capital city of Berlin. While between 2009 and 2011 it was possible to travel to Karlsruhe with a red, yellow or green sticker, from 1 January, 2012, the city began to require a yellow or green sticker. Following the pattern of other German cities, Karlsruhe continued to tighten the conditions, and exclusively a green badge has been needed to enter the city since 2013. In 2008, environmental zones were introduced also, for example, in Hannover and Munich, so to obtain an environmental sticker will certainly pay off.
From 1. 3. 2013, all drivers need a green badge to enter Karlsruhe. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros. The low-emissions zone of Karlsruhe includes the entire city centre and the adjacent areas.
