The environmental badge should be placed in the bottom-right corner of the windscreen.
As early as 2011, Magdeburg decided to introduce a low-emissions zone to reduce emissions and improve the quality of life of citizens. Therefore, from 1st September 2011, only German and foreign vehicles with a valid green plaque of the strictest class can visit the city. In 2008, environmental zones were introduced also, for example, in Hannover and Munich, so to obtain an environmental sticker will certainly pay off.
From 1.9.2011, entry to Magdeburg by both German and foreign cars is permitted only on condition that a green plaque is placed on the windscreen. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with the lowest impact on air pollution and that thus comply with the Euro 4 (diesel) or Euro 1 (petrol) emissions classes. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 €.
Magdeburg’s low-emissions zone is bordered by the roads and streets Albert-Vater-Straße (B1) and Walther-Rathenau-Straße in the north; Schleinufer and Steubenallee in the east; and Erich-Weinert-Straße and Am Fuchsberg and Europa-, West- and Südring in the south. The B71 highway intersecting the city from north to south is excluded from the zone.
