About Green Zones in Mainz and Wiesbaden

Green Zone in Mainz and Wiesbaden, Germany

The neighbouring municipalities of Mainz and Wiesbaden in Rhineland-Palatinate introduced a joint low-emissions zone in 2013 to reduce emissions and improve quality of life. As of February 1, 2013, only vehicles with a green environmental badge can enter either city.

Driving in Mainz and Wiesbaden

Are you going to Mainz or Wiesbaden by car?

From 1. 2. 2013, it is obligatory to place a green plaque on your windscreen, whether you drive a German or foreign car. The entry to Mainz and Wiesbaden is thus only allowed to vehicles that have a minimum impact on air pollution and which comply with Euro 4 (diesel) and Euro 1 (petrol) emissions standards. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 €.
The low-emissions zone of Mainz is bordered by the E42 and A643 motorways, along with the Rhine River in the north and northeast. The industrial zones in the north and south of the city are excluded from the environmental zone.
Wiesbaden’s low-emissions zone follows the territorial cadastre of the city, with the exception of the highway outside the zone.
