Validity of the Vienna Low Emission Zone

Vienna plans to gradually tighten entry to the environmental zone on its territory. Currently, if you have a company vehicle (N1 category) or any truck, you must have the Austrian environmental badge, also known as Umwelt-Pickerl, in order to enter the environmental zone Vienna.

Penalty of 2,180 Euros

Breach of duty is severely punished – the fine may go up to 2,180 euros (i.e. approximately £ 1800).

Ecological Zones in Vienna (Lower Austria)

There are restrictions for vehicles of categories N1, N2, and N3 in the environmental zones across Austria. These include the environmental zone in Vienna and the Lower Austria zone, which also covers the districts of Bruck an der Leitha, Gänserndorf, Korneuburg, Mödling, and Tulln.

Are you travelling to Vienna by truck or company car?

From 1. 1. 2016, a restriction applies to vehicles in categories N1, N2 and N3, allowing entry only to cars falling under the EURO 3 emissions class and above. Entrance to the low-emissions zone of Vienna thus requires that the coloured “Pickerl” plaque be affixed to the windscreen. This plaque states the emissions class. Breach of duty is severely punished – the fine may go up to 2,180 euros (£ 1800).
