About green zones in Wuppertal

Green Zone in Wuppertal, Germany

Wuppertal, as well as the entire Ruhr industrial agglomeration, has been gradually tightening conditions because of an increase in the concentration of emissions. The low-emissions zone was introduced back in 2011, and since July 1, 2014, only passenger cars and trucks with a green environmental badge have been permitted access. The restrictions apply to both German and foreign cars.

Driving in Wuppertal

Are you going to Wuppertal by car?

As of 1.7.2014, entry to Wuppertal and the Ruhr industrial area is permitted on the condition that a green environmental plaque is placed on the windscreen . Only vehicles with the lowest impact on air pollution that meet at least Euro 4 (diesel) or Euro 1 (petrol) emissions standards are allowed. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 €.

Wuppertal is part of the Ruhr’s low-emissions zone, which includes cities such as Dortmund, Essen and Hagen, as well as important highways between them. The Wuppertal zone itself includes not only the city, but also the Vohwinkel district and the surrounding villages of Elberfeld-West, Uellendahl / Katernberg, Elberfeld, Barmen, Oberbarmen, Heckinghausen and Langerfeld.
