Berlin was chosen as the first city for the introduction of environmental stickers in Germany. From 1. 1. 2008, only cars with a valid environmental badge (red, yellow or green) were allowed to enter the environmental zones. Initially, entrance was granted to even less environmentally friendly vehicles. That changed, however, on 1.1. 2010, since which date only vehicles with a green badge may enter the city. In 2008, environmental zones were introduced also, for example, in Hannover and Munich, so to obtain an environmental sticker will certainly pay off.
From 1. 1. 2010, all drivers need a green badge to enter Berlin. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros.
The low-emissions zone of Berlin includes the entire extended city centre and is encompassed by the S-Bahn railway ring.
