Blue E-Sticker for Germany

What is the blue E-Sticker for Germany?

The E-Sticker is for vehicles registered outside Germany that qualify as electric vehicles under Germany’s rules for electromobility benefits. If a city or authority has set up these benefits, the E-Sticker shows that your vehicle is eligible for local perks, like free parking or special access to certain streets or zones.

The blue E-Sticker is tied to the number plate and has an unlimited validity.

Where do E-Sticker benefits apply?

E-Sticker benefits only apply in areas where a local city or road authority has introduced electromobility privileges and indicated this with traffic signs. These benefits are not available everywhere, but you can find them in many German cities, and their number is increasing. They differ depending on the location and may include benefits such as free parking. In Berlin, for example, they can completely replace the green Umweltplakette.

Electric vehicles can benefit from green mobility in many German cities, including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Hanover, as well as other large cities.

Blue E-Plakette vs Green Umweltplakette

The E-Plakette is a non-compulsory sticker for electric vehicles registered abroad. It does not replace the green environmental badge, which is required for all low emission zones in Germany. Thanks to the E-Plakette you can enjoy local EV benefits, while the green environmental badge is the standard requirement for accessing low emission zones. You can purchase the green Umweltplakette in our e-shop.

Who can get an E-Sticker?

You can qualify for an E-Sticker if your vehicle is registered outside Germany and is a battery-electric vehicle (BEV), a fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV), or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that meets at least one of these criteria: CO₂ emissions of 50 g/km or lower, or an electric-only range of at least 40 km. Petrol and diesel vehicles (including EURO 6), mild hybrids (non-plug-in), and PHEVs that do not meet these criteria are not eligible.

Vehicles registered in Germany are not permitted to receive a blue E-Plakette. This is because they have their own equivalent, the E-Kennzeichen.

Eligible:

  • Battery electric vehicle (BEV)
  • Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)
    • Conditions:
      • CO₂ ≤ 50 g/km or
      • electric-only range ≥ 40 km, if first registered after 2018 or
      • electric-only range ≥ 30 km, if first registered before 2018

Not eligible:

  • Petrol/Diesel vehicles (including EURO 6)
  • LPG/Gas vehicles
  • Mild hybrids
  • Non-qualifying PHEV

Who benefits from the E-Sticker?

When the E-Plakette is typically worth getting

The E-Sticker is usually worth getting if your vehicle is registered outside Germany and your home country does not already provide an equivalent electric vehicle marking that Germany recognises. It helps you take advantage of local electromobility benefits, such as parking benefits (e.g. fee exemptions or time allowances), access to designated roads or lanes, and local access exemptions. These benefits are only valid where they have been officially established and clearly marked.

E-Plakette privileges implemented in Germany

Last updated: 3/2026

City Benefits
Bavaria (statewide: all municipalities in Bayern) Up to 3 hours free parking in all public parking areas where parking fees would otherwise apply (since 1 April 2025, valid throughout Bavaria).
Berlin Berlin has an Allgemeinverfügung (general order) allowing electric vehicles with E-Kennzeichen to drive in the Berlin Umweltzone without the green Umweltplakette. Foreign EVs can use the blue E-Plakette to enter the Umweltzone.
Düsseldorf The city of Düsseldorf states that the Umweltspuren/special lanes may be used by buses, bicycles, taxis, and electric vehicles.
Gelsenkirchen Three hours of free parking wherever a ticket would normally be required (on public streets and in public car parks). Additional local perks include cheaper resident permits and permits for tradespeople/social and ambulant services (for EVs with an E-Badge).
Hamburg Free parking at all parking ticket machines in Hamburg within the applicable maximum parking time with E-Sticker.
Hannover Free parking in public spaces (Parkgebührenzonen I-III) for vehicles displaying an E-Sticker until 31 December 2026. A parking disc is required and the maximum parking time of 2.5 hours still applies. This is not valid in parking garages.
Kiel In the designated central area, eligible vehicles can park free of charge in on-street paid parking bays for up to 2 hours. You must use a parking disc, and any shorter local maximum parking times still apply.
Munich Eligible EVs (with an E-Sticker) can park for up to three hours for free in public on-street and public parking spaces (recognisable by the blue ‘P’ sign). Proof of eligibility must be provided via a parking disc or parking app; normal fees apply after 3 hours.
Sindelfingen Battery-electric vehicles can park free of charge in city-managed paid parking spaces. The city notes that this rule is reviewed annually and, as of 2024, is valid until further notice. Proof of eligibility is provided via an E-Badge.

How to obtain the blue E-Sticker for a foreign-registered vehicle?

To obtain an E-Sticker for a foreign-registered vehicle, you will typically need to provide a document confirming the vehicle’s EV classification. This is your vehicle registration certificate (or an equivalent document), a Certificate of Conformity (CoC), or another suitable document that clearly shows that the vehicle qualifies as an electric vehicle. Blue E-Sticker FAQs

Is an E-Plakette the same as a EURO 6 blue sticker?

No. The E-Plakette is for electric vehicles and is not part of a separate EURO 6 badge system. Germany’s low emission zone badge system has not been expanded to introduce a new “blue EURO 6 badge”.

Do I need an E-Plakette if my country already marks EVs?

We recommend getting the E-Sticker, as it provides a clear way to show eligibility for foreign-registered electric vehicles in Germany. While some foreign EV markings may be accepted, recognition can vary by local authority, so the E-Badge can help reduce uncertainty.

Are plug-in hybrids eligible?

Only some plug-in hybrids qualify for an E-Plakette. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is eligible only if it meets at least one of these thresholds: CO₂ emissions of 50 g/km or less, or an electric-only range of at least 40 km. If your PHEV does not meet either requirement, it is not eligible.

Where to attach an E-Sticker?

The E-Sticker must be attached at the rear window of the vehicle so that it is clearly visible. Please note: In contrast, the green environmental sticker must always be attached to the front windscreen.
