About Green Zones in Ruhrgebiet

Green zone in the conurbation of Ruhrgebiet

Ruhrgebiet is a conurbation of several industrial towns in the west of Germany. These include Bonn, Essen, Dortmund and Hagen. Although individual cities have introduced the environmental zones and the obligation to have the environmental sticker at different times, since 1.7. 2014, all of them require a green sticker to enter the environmental zones.

Driving in Ruhrgebiet

Are you going to Ruhrgebiet by car?

From 1. 7. 2014, all drivers need a green badge to enter Ruhr. Entrance is therefore allowed only to vehicles with a minimum level of air pollution that falls under the Euro 4 and Euro 1 emissions classes for diesel and petrol, respectively. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros. Large cities in the west of Germany – Dortmund, Bonn, Essen, Hagen, Gladbeck, and Oberhausen – are part of the Ruhr emission zone, and as they intersect important motorway connections, you cannot avoid buying the environmental badge.
