About Green Zones in Duisburg

Green Zone in Duisburg, Germany

From 1.7. 2014, Duisburg and the entire Ruhr area to which the city belongs requires that vehicles display the green environmental badge. The reason for setting up a low-emissions zone is to prevent cars from entering that emit a high concentration of nitrogen oxides and severely deteriorate air quality. Hence, both domestic and foreign passenger cars and trucks are obliged to stick a green plaque on the windscreen when entering the zone.

Which types of vehicles are affected?

The obligation to own the environmental badge applies to both German and foreign passenger cars (M1); motorhomes (M1); heavy campers (M1); minibuses (M2); buses (M3); small transporters (N1); transporters (N2); trucks (N2); and heavy goods vehicles (N3).

Driving in Duisburg

Are you going to Duisburg by car?

From 1st July 2014, both German and foreign drivers need the green badge to enter Duisburg and other cities of the Ruhr industrial area. Thus, only vehicles that produce a minimum level of air pollution – Euro 4 (diesel) or Euro 1 (petrol) – are allowed to enter the city. Failure to comply with these rules is punished in Germany with a fine of 100 euros.

Duisburg is part of the Ruhr’s low-emissions zone, which includes Dortmund, Essen, Hagen and other cities, as well as highways between them. The border of the low-emissions zone of Duisburg follows the territorial district of the city.
