In the event of worsening air quality, entrance is allowed only to cars with a valid Crit’Air environmental badge and at a limited speed. The specific rules for entering the Grenoble low emission zone are subject to the current air quality and are announced at least one day in advance.
If you drive without the environmental badge in the low-emissions zone, you will pay a fine of € 68 (i.e. approximately £ 62), which can climb to € 375 (i.e. approximately £ 320) in cases of late payment.
The environmental badge should be placed in the bottom-right corner of the windscreen.
In addition to the capital city of France, Grenoble introduced a low-emissions zone on the 1st November, 2016. This is the so-called emergency low-emissions zone (ZPA), which comes into force in cases of exceptionally bad emissions conditions. As of the 1st April 2017, in days with high air pollution, foreign drivers of passenger cars also need a valid environmental badge.
Other French cities will soon follow suit. Following the example of Germany, Austria and Denmark, France aspires to improve the environment in all major cities, which can introduce the ecological zones by their own volition.
You can read more about the types of environmental badges in the section Types of Environmental Badges.
From 1. 4. 2017, foreign cars must be marked with the “Crit’Air” environmental badge. This so-called emergency low-emissions zone takes effect when the emissions limits are exceeded for more than 5 days. Only vehicles with the crit’air sticker may therefore enter the activated low-emissions zone. The rules then tighten up after 7 days and only vehicles with the classes E, 1, 2, and 3 are allowed to enter the city. There are 6 types of badge in France that express how much the vehicle is involved in air pollution. If you fail to comply with these rules, you risk a fine of € 68 to € 375 (i.e. approximately £ 62 – £ 320).
The low-emissions zone of Grenoble includes the central area of the city and is bounded by the rivers Drac and Isere, as well as the roads D1090 and D1532.
