Validity of Tyrol Low Emission Zone – Motorway A12

Restrictions apply to the A12 motorway from the 6.35th kilometre near the village of Langkampfen and the 90th km near the village of Zirl in both directions, and they apply to trucks / lorries over 7.5 tons.

Euro-class driving ban

On this same A12 section, driving is permitted only for vehicles meeting the required Euro class. Since 1 January 2021, only Euro VI is allowed (plus fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles). The Euro class must be proven via the Austrian emissions class sticker (Abgasplakette / IG-L marking) or equivalent proof for certain vehicle types.

Night restrictions

During the night, driving is generally prohibited for the affected heavy vehicles. Limited exemptions exist (e.g., specific Euro VI journeys under strict conditions).

Winter period – from 1.11. to 30.4.

  • Monday to Saturday from 20:00 – 05:00
  • Sundays and public holidays from 23:00 – 05:00

Summer period – from 1.5. to 31.10.

  • Monday to Saturday from from 22:00 – 05:00
  • Sundays and public holidays from 23:00 – 05:00

Speed limit

Speed restrictions apply to all vehicles during the night hours (22:00–05:00).

  • passenger cars: around 100 km/h depending on location
  • buses: 90 km / h
  • lorries > 7.5 t: 60 km/h

Penalty of 2,180 Euros

Breach of duty is severely punished – the fine may go up to 2,180 euros (i.e. approximately £ 1800).

Emissions Restrictions

There are restrictions for vehicles of categories N1, N2, and N3 in the environmental zones across Austria. These include the environmental zone in Tirol, on the A12 Inntal motorway between Langkampfen and Zirl, and districts: Langkampfen, Angath, Wörgl, Kundl, Radfeld, Kramsach, Münster, Wiesing, Jenbach, Buch in Tirol, Stans, Vomp, Terfens, Weer, Kolsass, Wattens, Volder, Mils, Tulfes, Ampass.

Failure to comply may result in a fine of up to € 2,1801800).

From 31. 12. 2017, a restriction applies to vehicles in categories N2 and N3, allowing entrance only to lorries that fall within the EURO 4 emissions class and above. Entrance to the low-emissions zone of Tyrol requires that the coloured Pickerl plaque be affixed to the windscreen. The plaque shows the emissions class. Breach of duty is severely punished – the fine may go up to € 2,1801800).

The restriction applies to the section of motorway in both directions between the 6.35th kilometre point, near the village of Langkampfen, and the 90th km point from Zirl.
