The validity of ecological zones in Vienna
Vienna plans to gradually tighten entry to the environmental zone on its territory. Currently, if you have a company vehicle (N1 category) or any truck, you must have the Austrian environmental badge, also known as Umwelt-Pickerl, in order to enter the environmental zone Vienna.
From 01. 07. 2014
- restrictions for vehicles of category N1, N2 and N3 with emission class EURO 0 and EURO 1. Entry allowed with emission class EURO 2 or higher.
From 01. 01. 2016
- restrictions for vehicles of category N1, N2 and N3 with emission class Euro 2. Entry allowed for vehicles with emission class EURO 3 and higher.

From 1. 1. 2016, a restriction applies to vehicles in categories N1, N2 and N3, allowing entry only to cars falling under the EURO 3 emissions class and above. Entrance to the low-emissions zone of Vienna thus requires that the coloured “Pickerl” plaque be affixed to the windscreen. This plaque states the emissions class. Breach of duty is severely punished - the fine may go up to 2,180 euros.
The low-emissions zone of Vienna is valid throughout the capital, in an area of 415 km² with 1.8 million inhabitants.
